I Read the News This Week: Beatles Headlines Roundup

Guardian
: Meeting Elvis was ‘my biggest day with the Beatles’, says road manager’s book

Mal Evans idolised Elvis, writing in one passage: “If there is one day in my life I shall never forget, it is the day when the two biggest phenomena in showbiz met for the one and only time.

“The day the Beatles met Elvis Presley. I was there that day in El’s palatial Hollywood home. And that will always be the biggest day of all the years I have spent with the famous Beatles.”

He recalled that Elvis played them Beatles LPs before finding guitars for each of them. Evans listened in awe as “they began to make the place rock with … improvised beat music.”

Liverpool Echo: Peter Asher Doc Uses Historic McCartney Tapes

As part of the research for the 1997 book, Sir Paul sat down with writer Barry Miles to talk all aspects of his journey. The parts on the Asher household were particularly illuminating and the filmmakers were honoured to receive permission to use these voice recordings, which are housed in Liverpool John Moore's University, for the film.

Dan said: "We sent Paul the passages we wanted and he said, 'great, no problem.' They are so fresh, immediate and intimate in a way I don't think Dayna and I would have got from the sit down interview."

Dayna laughed: "[After discovering the tapes existed] We were kind of praying he would turn us down for the sit down interview. As soon as Barry told us about the tapes and we read the book, we knew this would be way better. It's 30 years younger and [Barry and Paul] were two old friends who had known eachother since the early 60s."
