Artifacts: John Lennon's Daily Howl

The Daily Howl was a mock newspaper John Lennon created and shared with his friends while he was a student at Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool. Full of "Goon Show"-influenced prose and grotesque and sometimes offensive cartoons, it landed him in trouble, but also helped earn him entrance into art school. You can also see the roots of his later writings and drawings collected in his two books of the 1960s: "In His Own Write" and "Spaniard in the Works."

History: The Beatles-Hollies dustup over "If Needed Someone"

It's generally an honor when another artist covers one of your songs, but not in the case of George Harrison and the Hollies. In late 1965, the Manchester harmony merchants released their version of George's "If I Needed Someone" as a single. George didn't like it and said so, most notably in a New Musical Express article published on Dec. 15. The Hollie's Graham Nash, in the same story, lashed back at George. You can read the exchange in the article excerpt below. The Hollies' single was released on Dec. 3, 1965, the same day as the George-sung version came out on Rubber Soul . Maybe this was part of George's irritation. Here, a version of his song was out as a single, while his own rendition was tucked away near the end of side 2 of the Beatles' newest LP, hidden amongst great new tunes by John and Paul. In America, Capitol didn't even include the song on its version of Rubber Soul , holding it until 1966's Yesterday and Today ...

History: The Tornados talk Beatles, July 1963

The Tornadoes were the first British pop band to the U.S. charts, with the space-age instrumental hit, "Telstar," written and produced by the legendary Joe Meek. By 1963, the band had lost considerable ground to the Shadows in the UK instro-pop stakes and the emergence of Mersey Beat. Here, the group weigh in on the Beatles' prospects in the U.S. From Disc , July 13, 1963 "Listen," said Clem. "When we cut 'Telstar', did the Americans say what a great British sound? They didn't. They just said: 'We like the sound of The Tornados. It's their own sound.' "Well, this is what I'm saying about The Beatles and all the other Liverpool groups that have made it big. It's not a special Merseybeat rhythm and blues, or big beat. It's a special sound belonging to the group that thought of it. "And good luck to them. It's different, new and exciting."

Yoko Ono in voice cast of "Isle of Dogs"

I haven't seen the film, yet, so I don't know much about her role, by Yoko Ono is credited as providing her voice to a character in Wes Anderson's new animated feature, "Isle of Dog." According to IMDB, Yoko voices a character dubbed "assistant scientist." Her name is listed on the film's poster, too, along with the rest of the film's star-studded vocal cast:
