History: The Beatles-Hollies dustup over "If Needed Someone"

It's generally an honor when another artist covers one of your songs, but not in the case of George Harrison and the Hollies. In late 1965, the Manchester harmony merchants released their version of George's "If I Needed Someone" as a single. George didn't like it and said so, most notably in a New Musical Express article published on Dec. 15. The Hollie's Graham Nash, in the same story, lashed back at George. You can read the exchange in the article excerpt below. The Hollies' single was released on Dec. 3, 1965, the same day as the George-sung version came out on Rubber Soul . Maybe this was part of George's irritation. Here, a version of his song was out as a single, while his own rendition was tucked away near the end of side 2 of the Beatles' newest LP, hidden amongst great new tunes by John and Paul. In America, Capitol didn't even include the song on its version of Rubber Soul , holding it until 1966's Yesterday and Today ...

Artifacts: John Lennon's Daily Howl

The Daily Howl was a mock newspaper John Lennon created and shared with his friends while he was a student at Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool. Full of "Goon Show"-influenced prose and grotesque and sometimes offensive cartoons, it landed him in trouble, but also helped earn him entrance into art school. You can also see the roots of his later writings and drawings collected in his two books of the 1960s: "In His Own Write" and "Spaniard in the Works."

Sean Ono Lennon to Appear on 'CBS Sunday Morning' Dec. 21

"CBS Sunday Morning" is teasing an interview with Sean this weekend: The music of The Beatles, and of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, is timeless. And yet, musician, songwriter and producer Sean Ono Lennon says he feels a responsibility to promote his parents' legacy, by reminding the world of its power. He talks with Anthony Mason about the Oscar-winning animated short inspired by their anti-war anthem "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"; the new HBO Max documentary "One to One: John & Yoko"; and about the "gift" of producing a new album of John & Yoko's music.

Mal Evans notebook containing Beatles lyrics and doodles goes on display in Liverpool

A notebook kept by Beatles assistant Mal Evans containing draft lyrics to "Hey Jude" and other songs is going display at the Beatles Story museum in Liverpool, the BBC reports . The book, compiled between 1967-1968, features Sir Paul McCartney's draft of the famous song alongside poetry and doodles squiggled by the music legend. Stephen Maycock, a specialist in Beatles memorabilia, said the book provided "a fascinating insight into the Beatles' creative process." It will be exhibited at The Beatles Story in Liverpool from 22 February. The notebook also contains a part-lyric for Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, recording notes by George Harrison for All You Need Is Love as well as verses for other songs including For The Benefit of Mr Kite, Good Morning Good Morning and All Together Now. It belonged to tour manager Mal Evans, who was a part-time bouncer at Liverpool's Cavern Club when he was enlisted as a bodyguard and roadie for the band.
