Listen to the Beatles' 'Helter Skelter' (Second Version, Take 17) from Forthcoming Anthology 4

Info: “[Helter Skelter] was a track we did in total madness and hysterics in the studio,” recalled Ringo — with Paul adding: “We just tried to get it louder. Guitars: can we have them sound louder? The drums: louder! We did it like that, because I like noise.” Paul and George played guitar, with John taking over on bass. Apparently Ringo thrashed the drums so hard during takes that he declared: “I’ve got blisters on my fingers!” Even though Take 17 ends with Paul calling out “keep that one, mark it fab,” the master take is 21. Helter Skelter (Second Version, Take 17) is one of 36 alt versions that feature on Anthology 4, including 13 that are previously unreleased.

Debating Sgt. Pepper: Is it the best, worst, whatever?

Depending on who's talking, Sgt. Pepper is either the best or worst album of all time, the most influential or the most overrated. Much of the time, those offering these judgments don't provide much in support, pro or con. There's little discussion about why they feel a particular way. They either like Pepper or they don't. But all the blanket statements made about the album this summer, which marks the 50th anniversary of its release, got me thinking: What are people really saying when they say this stuff? First Listen: Beatles 'Anthology 4

I've only listened through it once, and I've done no a/b-ing or deep analysis, but here's my take on the "new" tunes included on the Beatles Anthology 4 album, out today. As you likely know, there are 13 previously unreleased tracks on the collection, along with new mixes of "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love." The rest of the release includes tunes that have popped up on the Fabs' boxsets, on the "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" online release, or on the "Free as a Bird" EP. "Now and Then," from 2023, rounds things out. So, here's what's new: "Tell Me Why (Takes 12 and 13)" — This is a really fun outtake that captures the group practicing their harmonies and then launching into the tune with a guitar intro, which was later lopped off.
