DVD and Blu-Ray Sales of the Extras-Free "The Beatles: Get Back" Are Terrible and Peter Jackson Says There Are Still No Plans for an Expanded Edition

Shocker: The genius plan to release Peter Jackson's "The Beatles: Get Back" on DVD and Blu-ray with no extras when it's still readily available on Disney+ has resulted in lackluster sales.

Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 calls the home video release of the film a rare flop for the Fab Four, despite Ringo trying to gin up sales with photos of his feet. Ick! And also, WTF?

Friedman writes:

The DVD-Blu Ray release was coming, then postponed and kind of fell between the cracks. It should have been a monster release.

“Get Back” was finally released three weeks ago in both formats. No one knows about it, and it’s been a dud. The DVD version has sold just 12,716 copies. The Blu Ray has sold 31,661. This is very disappointing. Total sales so far have come to just $1.6 million.

Meanwhile, on The Business podcast, Jackson reaffirmed that Disney and Apple (The Beatles' Apple, not the Newton manufacturer) evidently has no interest in having him do an extended cut, even though he's very good at such things.

Jackson said:

Disney and Apple are reluctant because they say — and they might be quite right—that there’s no market anymore for extended cuts,” he explained. “But I know that there’s five or six hours of fantastic material that we didn’t include, and I don’t want it to go back into the vaults for fifty years. So, let’s just say that it’s a conversation that’s happening, but it’s not necessarily a definitive one at this point.”

I'm not a business genius, but here's what I would do: Remove "Get Back" from streaming, wait until Christmas 2024 to build up demand, and put out a massively expanded and very expensive version of the film. Maybe even do a second volume of music from the sessions, too.

I think it would work based on the fact that I would buy it. But I won't buy a Blu-ray or DVD of stuff I've already watched and can stream again whenever I want.

On the bright side, at least a Revolver box is coming soon.
