L.A. Times Provides More Details on Beatles' Upcoming 'Now and Then'

Some more details on the new Beatles tune from the Los Angeles Times : McCartney has spent nearly 30 years with “Now and Then” lingering in the back of his mind — amazingly, the time separating its release and “Real Love” is longer than the distance between “Free as a Bird” and “The Long and Winding Road,” the final single the Beatles released in their lifespan — so it should come as no surprise that the finished product hardly sounds haphazard. It’s deliberate and sumptuous, savvily disguising the flaws in the original cassette tape and the age in McCartney’s voice through seamless studio trickery. Most of this sleight of hand comes from McCartney, who is credited for production alongside Giles Martin — the son of original Beatles producer George Martin who has become the caretaker of their recorded legacy — and plays every instrument outside of Ringo’s drums and the trace elements of Lennon’s piano and Harrison’s rhythm guitar parts from the 1990s. This has been a good year for Beatles fans. The Sgt. Pepper anniversary box set released this summer was, in my opinion, an archival release done right. And this month we'll finally see an official release of the band's fan club Christmas records (although I wish they'd put them on CD, not just vinyl). But what didn't we get? A 50th anniversary edition of the other Beatles album released in 1967: The Magical Mystery Tour . Yes, I realize Apple Corps hasn't completely ignored MMT in recent years. The MMT film came out on Blu-ray in 2012, packaged in a special edition that included a re-pressing of the original soundtrack EP. Waking up to a day highlighted by the release of a newly recorded, never-before-heard Beatles song is something nobody imagined might happen again and, from what the surviving members of the band tell us, will never happen again.
