Universal Music Wins Court Ruling Over Rare Beatles Tape

Via Law Commentary : Universal Music Group has won a court ruling allowing it to pursue ownership of a rare 1962 Beatles demo tape that a former Abbey Road engineer allegedly rescued from destruction and kept for decades. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Cowan ruled on October 16, 2026, that Universal subsidiary Calderstone Productions had established its right to seek the recording's return from the estate of Geoff Emerick. The decision clears a major obstacle before a January 2027 trial over whether the studio abandoned the tape or Emerick took company property without permission. Emerick's estate has challenged the decision, with attorney Kenneth Freundlich filing a motion for reconsideration last week. The motion accuses the court of rewriting decades-old ownership documents and argues that allowing Universal's claim to proceed would result in a "manifest injustice." The dispute concerns a recording made June 6, 1962, during the Beatles' first sessio...

Beatles Recording Engineer Phil McDonald Dies

Phil McDonald, who shared a Grammy Award for his recording engineer work on the Beatles' Abbey Road LP died this week. He was born in 1945 but his age at death (79 or 80) was not immediately available. Abbey Road Studios posted a tribute detailing McDonald's career at the facility, which started at age 18 when he started work in the studio's tape library, later advancing to a job as tape-op, balance engineer and full-fledged recording engineer. According to the tribute, McDonald's first session with the Beatles "is documented as 17 June 1965 for 'Yesterday.' The following years working on Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and 'The White Album,' he would’ve been trained up by the likes of Geoff Emerick and Ken Scott before taking a central role in the recording of Abbey Road . Phil’s philosophy was always to get as close as possible to recording the true sound he heard in the studio." McDonald worked with all four Beatles on the...

A new book from McCartney expert Luca Perasi: Released on 22 October 2026, Flowers in the Dirt. The Road to Comeback (1987-89) by Luca Perasi (L.I.L.Y. Publishing, 198 pages, available in paperback and hardcover) tells the story of one of McCartney's most challenging but rewarding periods. “Over these two years, Paul recorded over 70 songs, and this album was the final piece in a well-executed strategy that saw Paul change his artistic direction with the help of his manager Richard Ogden,” says the author, who in 2022 was credited in the booklet of Paul McCartney’s compilation The 7” Singles Box for additional research with the MPL team. “If Press to Play has gone down in history as Paul McCartney’s prime example of “that unmistakable 80s sound,” the author adds, “Flowers in the Dirt reveals itself to be a heavily computerised album, but at the same time stands out as a fabulous collection of clean and scintillating pop songs.” There’s much more than only Flowers in th...
