A new podcast to check out, details from creator
‘Beatles Undercover: The Best, Worst and Weirdest Versions of Beatles Songs Ever Recorded’ began as a radio show on my local community station. As a lifelong Beatles fanatic I’ve always been fascinated by the way that their songs could be translated into virtually any musical genre and by the seemingly infinite variety of interpretations that different artists could bring to them. So even after the radio show ended I continued to collect as many different versions as I could find, and still do.
So in 2023, when I started thinking seriously about creating this podcast series, I began the gargantuan task of wading through all of the thousands of versions I’d collected and sorting them loosely by genre in order to make assembling these podcasts a little easier. I also tried to research some basic information about each track and artist, such as country of origin, year the recording was released and the name of the album or EP, if any, on which it first appeared (many thanks to secondhandsongs.com and discogs.com). Needless to say, this took many months, but I think the effort was worth it.
Each podcast is approximately an hour long and features an eclectic mix of genres and eras, from the first cover versions that came out in 1963 to the present. The format is much the same as my original radio show, with me introducing each set, listing the titles and artists and discussing some of the more interesting tracks. These podcasts can either be downloaded as mp3s or streamed; the links are near the top of each post.
