Debating Sgt. Pepper: Is it the best, worst, whatever?

Depending on who's talking, Sgt. Pepper is either the best or worst album of all time, the most influential or the most overrated. Much of the time, those offering these judgments don't provide much in support, pro or con. There's little discussion about why they feel a particular way. They either like Pepper or they don't. First Listen: Beatles 'Anthology 4

I've only listened through it once, and I've done no a/b-ing or deep analysis, but here's my take on the "new" tunes included on the Beatles Anthology 4 album, out today. As you likely know, there are 13 previously unreleased tracks on the collection, along with new mixes of "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love." The rest of the release includes tunes that have popped up on the Fabs' boxsets, on the "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" online release, or on the "Free as a Bird" EP. "Now and Then," from 2023, rounds things out. So, here's what's new: "Tell Me Why (Takes 12 and 13)" — This is a really fun outtake that captures the group practicing their harmonies and then launching into the tune with a guitar intro, which was later lopped off. Beatles' "Man from the motor trade" passes away

Terry Doran with John Lennon Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn today reports the passing of Beatles' associate Terry Doran. Doran, a Liverpool car dealer, was friends with Brian Epstein before Epstein started managing the Beatles. The pair formed Bydor Cars (a combination of their names) in 1965 in part because the Beatles and Brian's other acts were buying so many vehicles with their newfound riches. The Beatles all purchased cars, including a selection of custom Minis and sports cars, via Brydor. It's said that Doran inspired the line "m eeting a man from the motor trade" in the song "She's Leaving Home" on the Sgt. Pepper album, but Paul McCartney, in his memoir, "Many Years from Now," denied this, saying "it was just fiction, like the sea captain in 'Yellow Submarine,' they weren't real people." How ridiculous are Quincy Jones' comments about the Beatles?

Making the rounds this week are some unkind remarks Quincy Jones made about the Beatles in an interview with Vulture . To wit: What’d you think when you first heard rock music? Rock ain’t nothing but a white version of rhythm and blues, motherfucker. You know, I met Paul McCartney when he was 21. What were your first impressions of the Beatles? That they were the worst musicians in the world. They were no-playing motherfuckers. Paul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Don’t even talk about it. I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn’t get it. We said, “Mate, why don’t you get some lager and lime, some shepherd’s pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.” So he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. DVD and Blu-Ray Sales of the Extras-Free "The Beatles: Get Back" Are Terrible and Peter Jackson Says There Are Still No Plans for an Expanded Edition

Shocker: The genius plan to release Peter Jackson's "The Beatles: Get Back" on DVD and Blu-ray with no extras when it's still readily available on Disney+ has resulted in lackluster sales. Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 calls the home video release of the film a rare flop for the Fab Four, despite Ringo trying to gin up sales with photos of his feet. Ick! And also, WTF? Friedman writes: The DVD-Blu Ray release was coming, then postponed and kind of fell between the cracks. It should have been a monster release. “Get Back” was finally released three weeks ago in both formats. No one knows about it, and it’s been a dud. The DVD version has sold just 12,716 copies. The Blu Ray has sold 31,661. This is very disappointing. Total sales so far have come to just $1.6 million.
