Ringo talks Beatles, Barry Keoghan and country music with the BBC

Indianapolis radio show host Bob Kevoian died of cancer at age 75 this week, surrounded by family members and listening to his favorite music from the second side of the Beatles' Abbey Road.

Apple Corps Proclaims 'Global Beatles Day' on June 25 - Color Version of 'All You Need is Love' Performance Set for Streaming

Book Review: 'BFI Film Classics: "A Hard Day's Night"'

BBC journalist Samira Ahmed's BFI Film Classics study of "A Hard Day's Night" must be good because it immediately made me want to watch the film again. Her description of key scenes in what Andrew Sarris memorably called the "'Citizen Kane' of jukebox movies" reminded me of how wonderfully entertaining the Beatles' first film is, and not just because it features the band. As Ahmed details, there's a lot of playful social commentary going as the young, irreverent and free-spirited Beatles confront different elements of the British establishment: The uptight, bowler-hatted Man from the City on the train; the assembled members of the press during the news conference; the neurotic director in charge of their upcoming TV appearance; the cynical ad man seeking to exploit George; the police who arrest Ringo. Book Review: 'With a Little Help From Their Friends: The Beatles and the People Who Made Them'

I'm not a big fan of "listicle" writing, particularly in book form, but " With a Little Help From Their Friends: The Beatles and the People Who Made Them ," by BBC broadcaster (and host of the excellent "Freak Zone") Stuart Maconie makes good use of the format, providing mini-profiles of folks who, in one way or another, influenced the lives and careers of the Fab Four. Maconie's list of 100 people ranges from the predictable (Fifth Beatles, Fifth Beatle candidates and various wives and lovers) to the relatively obscure (Peter Yolland? Robert Newman? Meta Davies? Shyamasundar Das?) to the left field (Imelda Marcos) with the author serving up the details in compelling fashion, with warmth and humor.
