Japan-Exclusive CD Single of Beatles' 'Free As A Bird / Real Love' Available

A CD single of the Beatles' "Free As A Bird / Real Love" is now available in Japan only. The CD, presented in the audiophile SHM format (playable on regular CD players), features the 2025 mixes by Jeff Lynne of "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love," taken from the newly release Anthology 4 compilation. The release includes English liner notes, lyrics with a Japanese translation and a card featuring the 7-inch "Free as a Bird" single's original picture sleeve art by John Lennon. How ridiculous are Quincy Jones' comments about the Beatles?

Making the rounds this week are some unkind remarks Quincy Jones made about the Beatles in an interview with Vulture . To wit: What’d you think when you first heard rock music? Well, as hinted earlier this week, the Beatles are springing a revamped, expanded "Anthology" collection on us, along with a reprint of the "Anthology" book and a return of the "Anthology" video series via streaming. The audio sets are out Nov. 21 . Ordering info on the Beatles official site, which also offers exclusive editions for both box sets that include four 12-inch band photo art cards in a numbered envelope. The video series , now expanded with an extra episode, streams from Nov. 29 on Disney+ . And the book , which is in paperback only and appears to have a new cover wrap but the same contents, is out Oct. 14 . 1968 letter: Capitol Records execs feared Beatles' Apple label design was "pornographic"

The UK Independent has a story about a newly discovered 1968 letter from Capitol Records to then-Apple Records head Ron Kass relaying concerns from a U.S. record retailer that the Apple label design "looked like a vagina." The Independent article makes the claim that the complaint nearly led Capitol to scuttle the release of The Beatles' "Hey Jude/Revolution" single, but nowhere in the 1968 letter is this implied. Furthermore, as the letter points out, the entire Apple logo wouldn't even be displayed on "Hey Jude/Revolution" or any other U.S. single, due to the large center hole placed in every U.S. 45rpm release. Americans wouldn't get a full look at the entire "half apple" logo until the release of "The White Album," in November - nearly three months after Capitol sent its letter.
