Banjo played by Beatles star John Lennon unveiled - BBC A banjo played by John Lennon has been unveiled alongside a mosaic featuring nearly 1,300 images of The Beatles star to mark what would have been his 85th birthday. Fans are expected from around the world for the celebrations at Strawberry Field on Beaconsfield Road in Liverpool, which feature a live performance at 12:00 BST by The Quarrymen, Lennon's original band with his former bandmates Rod Davis and Colin Hanton in the line-up. Charlie Jenkins obituary: Special effects director on Yellow Submarine - The Times Jenkins, who was experimenting with graphics and film titles for Richard Williams Animation in Soho Square, got wind of the excitement surrounding Yellow Submarine. He was 26, had never been to art school, and had learnt everything he knew on the shop floor, including at the TV Cartoons (TVC) studios — also, naturally, in Soho — of the Canadian director George Dunning, who had been commissioned to direct the Beatles film. What had impressed Dunning at TVC was Jenkins’s experimentation with rotoscoping, first used in Disney’s Snow White, and a way of tracing over live-action footage to create realistic movement. For a Ford project for Dunning, Jenkins had rotoscoped images of a live-action car depicted frame by frame in ever-changing paint-splash colours. Color Vinyl Versions of Ringo's First Four LPs on the Way

Via Universal: Ringo Starr’s first four solo albums are set to be reissued on special colored vinyl. These releases include Sentimental Journey (1970) on Buttermilk Yellow vinyl; Beaucoups Of Blues (1970) on Baby Blue vinyl; Ringo (1973) on Molten Lava vinyl; and Goodnight Vienna (1974) on Psychedelic Waves vinyl. Starr’s first solo album, Sentimental Journey, features the beloved title track plus 11 classic covers from the Great American Songbook. Ringo’s first step out on his own was a look back at the songs he grew up listening to, recalling fond memories of singing with relatives at family parties. Produced by George Martin, it was Ringo who suggested that they ‘take a sentimental journey.’ The follow-up, Beaucoups Of Blues, was also released in 1970. It was recorded over just two days in Nashville and produced by Pete Drake.
