Review: 'Paul McCartney: Man on the Run - Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack'

The soundtrack album for director Morgan Neville's new Wings-era doc, "Paul McCartney: Man on the Run," is a skimpy affair. It runs just under 50 minutes and features only three previously unissued tracks: "Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance," from the 1973 "James Paul McCartney" TV special; "Live and Let Die," from the "Rock Show" film, and a rough mix of "Arrow Through Me." The rest of the short track list features a mix of deep tracks ("Big Barn Bed," "Long-Haired Lady") and big hits ("Band on the Run," "Coming Up" and "Mull of Kintyre.") I couldn't explain why Macca released this album rather than just pointing people to the recent Wings compilation , but at least this single disk isn't a complete overlap of that 2-CD set, so there's at least some value for the money for newer fans or older ones who dumped their vinyl collections and now regret it. Review: 'Paul McCartney: Man on the Run'

Director Morgan Neville's "Paul McCartney: Man on the Run" is an entertaining and artful breeze through Macca's immediate post-Beatles career, looking at how he reinvented himself following the band's bitter break-up by starting a new group. There's lots for fans to enjoy here, including loads of vintage clips from interviews, TV shows, concerts and home movies. There's also a great deal of insightful commentary from Sean Ono Lennon and Paul's daughters Mary and Stella and brother Mike , along with a lot of predictable commentary from Paul, himself. Some of the best narrative comes from Linda McCartney , who, rightfully, is provided credit for helping Paul regain his self-confidence as a songwriter and performer after the Beatles split. The film also does a good job of detailing how shabbily and unfairly Linda was treated by fans and critics. Len Garry, Member of Pre-Beatles Group the Quarrymen, Dead at age 84

Len Garry, standing between Paul and John The Liverpool Echo reports the death today of Quarrymen Len Garry: The Quarrymen star, who played alongside John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the band which would later evolve into the Beatles, was recently diagnosed with pneumonia after being admitted to the Royal Liverpool Hospital following a suspected chest infection. His daughter Jane Garry confirmed the musician's death in a statement this morning. Announcing the news, she said: "My Dad 'Len Garry' passed away at home in the early hours this morning. "The doctor told us he had hours to live and I said straight away 'he has to come home.' Which the doctor allowed.
