Review: 'Beatles '64'

The new documentary "Beatles '64," streaming on Disney+ is a compelling but slightly confused look at the impact the band made on the U.S. during its first visit here. Watching, you'd think that all of the reasons why we still talk, write and read about the group and continue to listen to its music, boils down to the two weeks it spent here in February 1964, when it made two live appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and played concerts in Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall in New York. There's no doubt that the visit was significant -- momentous even. But the film distorts history by trying to front-load the Beatles' entire legacy onto this one, brief trip. We get lots of talking heads -- writer Joe Queenan, Smokey Robinson, David Lynch, Ronnie Spector, Paul and Ringo, and more -- discussing how the band influenced and reflected attitudes around race and gender and social change and are essentially told that all of this stemmed from a couple of...

The Beatles' Pepsi radios

The Pepsi-machine-shaped transistor radio is familiar to anyone who's seen Albert and David Maysles' great documentary about the Beatles first visit to the U.S. In the film, there are various scenes of the band, particularly of Paul McCartney, listening to American radio for the first time via a radio shaped like a Pepsi vending machine. The story is that there were four of these radios awaiting the Beatles when they checked into their hotel suite. The band can be seen in the Maysles' film listening to one of them while traveling around New York via limousine. The band all gets a kick out of hearing their own music - and the antic announcements of New York's over-the-top DJs - over the air. Here's what one of the radios looks like up close.

Stash of Beatles Break-Up Legal Documents Up for Auction

Via the Daily Record : Unique legal documents detailing the "real story" behind the breakup of The Beatles more than 50 years ago have been discovered in a wardrobe. The never-seen-before legal papers are being auctioned off on December 12 - and are expected to fetch up to £8,000. Found following the death of the seller's brother, they are said to detail conversations about "the growing disputes" between members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - as well as discussions about the band's finances. The bundle also includes The Beatles' original 1967 Deed of Partnership, auctioneers Dawsons said, as well as events from "inside the courtroom" when McCartney sued his fellow group members. Denise Kelly, Head of Dawsons Entertainment & Memorabilia Department, said: "These unique and detailed documents are fascinating and once I began to read them, I just couldn't put them down until I had read every page. Review: The 'New' 'Let it Be' Looks Great But its Flaws are More Evident Than Ever

I enjoyed streaming the newly restored "Let it Be" on Disney+ over the weekend and thought that it looked and sounded great. Finally, those gloomy Twickenham scenes look a bit brighter and the Beatles are brought out of the shadows. Everything is more colorful and sharp. I think part of this film's reputation as a "downer" was due to the poor image quality. It's worth remembering that the footage originally was shot for TV and then blown up for display on movie screens and never did look that good -- not on movie screens nor on VHS. Once again, Peter Jackson's team has performed a visual feat of magic. Meanwhile, Disney and Apple have performed a bit of PR magic, too, in changing the narrative around the film, telling us that it's not a depressing look at the Beatles breaking up, but a joyful document of them working together -- a lost, misunderstood classic.
